The humble carrot is transformed when it’s fresh-pulled from your back garden into a mouth-wateringly sweet treat, crunchy and full of flavour. As well as traditional orange carrots, you can grow purple, yellow or even white varieties, as well as fast-growing round-rooted varieties just 5cm long the kids will love.
Sow carrot seed into shallow drills outside from late March or April. For a continuous supply, sow half a row each month through till autumn; you can also grow carrots in containers, especially the round-rooted types. Cover in horticultural fleece through summer to keep off carrot fly, protect from slugs and keep well-watered for a perfect harvest every time.
